An Analysis of Alternative Currency Orientated Initiatives Through the Lens of Real Utopias

ABSTRACT

Different socioeconomic contexts bring about new forms of dealing and understanding currency. Through the Danish enterprise Bybi and by adopting a critical theorist approach, this paper discusses potential social-value creation forms brought by an alternative currency-oriented initiative, that of the honeymoney. Relying on the concept of Real Utopias and the frameworks of diverse and moral economies, limitations, goals and discourse dichotomies are analysed. Diverse interviews were conducted as part of a qualitative research methods approach. In addition to that, we used a document analysis in order to assess the discourses of the enterprise’s partners. This paper argues for multiple findings, first suggesting that Bybi is a Real Utopia that uses an interstitial transformation. Dichotomies are found in the enterprise’s discourses and that of participants of partners, but findings mainly argue for the ways in which Bybi reframes the local economy from a market oriented one to a strong community oriented one.
