An inspiration for us has been work we started in 2020 with the Dutch performance group Building Conversation. The project drew our attention to how the way we speak influences the future we create.
Learning the ‘Parliament of Things’, a conversation format inspired by the philosopher Bruno Latour, meant thinking about the question ‘what would honey say if it could speak?’. It changed everything for us. We started thinking of honey as something that carries meaning between people, plants and animals instead of a product. All the relationships that surround the honey became important.
We began to explore conversation styles and practices from different cultures and philosophical traditions that bring new perspectives to how we cultivate our community. It takes practice, curiosity and experimentation.
This is why we hold regular ‘conversation and soup’ events, addressing issues that feel relevant and applying conversation techniques inspired by indigenous cultures.
All welcome to join.
We also share these techniques with others. We run training for businesses, city planners, universities and schools.
